At Celtic judo we emphasize discipline, respect, confidence and positivity on and off the mat. Our diverse membership practices judo for many different reasons including self defense, sport competition, cross training and physical fitness. ​All skill levels are welcome. 2017 Irish Masters​​







​Celtic Judo Club competed at the Irish Masters Open in Dublin on November 5th. How could Celtic Judo Club not go to Ireland? Celtic fighters won four medals and friend of the club George Kelly from Boston Judo Club (via Ireland 30 yrs ago) took Silver. Jose Marte went 2-2 in a solid combined 66/73kg division and took Bronze. Due to a convoluted system he was officially awarded a Silver for his specific age group. Jose also entered the 40-49 Open weight division, a bold move for a 66kg fighter. He beat the Silver medalist from the 81kg div. Rick Nickerson won Bronze with a nice drop seoi nage for ippon but was also awarded Silver for his specific age/wt. Matt Marcotte appeared to have locked up Bronze with a strong pin but was not granted continuation out of bounds and was eliminated. Wayne Dickinson (7-1) won Gold at 50-59 81kg and Bronze in the 50-59 Open wt division.

2022 U.S Open








Celtic Judoka took home three medals from The Open in Ft Lauderdale. Wayne Dickinson Gold M6 81kg, Jose Marte Silver M5 73kg and Max Axelrod Silver Novice Lightweight 🥇🥈🥈

Celtic Judo Club had a good showing at the 2017 Bay State Games at U Mass Boston. Jose Marte started the day with Gold in his Masters division. He then entered the 73kg black belt division and had a solid showing against fighters mostly half his age. He just missed the podium finishing 4th (2-2) in the biggest division of the tournament. Adam Dauphinee had a nice ippon win to secure Silver in his division and Bob Marsh took bronze in his Masters division. Friend of the Club Mark Jang (Mayo Quanchi) had a big day winning his Sr. Novice division (beating Adam in OT) and taking Silver in the 73kg black belt division. He split matches in two good battles against Jose and beat two brown belts. He lost the gold medal to a Judoka from Brazil.

2024 Liberty Bell Classic







   



Marco Ferrer (silver) and Steve Croteau (gold) graced the podium at the Liberty Bell Classic in Pennsylvania. Steve and Marco will be competing at the IJF World Veterans Championships in Las Vegas in November

2021 U. S. Open















CJC's Marco Ferrer and Wayne Dickinson won gold medals at the U.S. Open in Orlando. Marco helped his age 30+ 3-Man Team to the top of the podium. Wayne won the M6 81kg division.

 

2022 Lone Star Classic










Max Axelrod, Wayne Dickinson & Jose Marte fought at the 31st annual Lone Star Classic in Fort Worth. The day started with a clinic by Olympic medalist Marti Malloy (pictured above with Max & Jose) and ended with three medals, Wayne🥇, Max 🥈 & Jose 🥉.

2023 France










CJC's Wayne Dickinson won gold at the Eurometropole Veterans Championships in Mouvaux France on January 22. Wayne survived a tough draw (Multiple World Veterans Medalist in the first round) with wins vs SUI, GBR, FRA & FRA.

Our own Jim T (second from right) made time during his European vacation for a training session at Poznan judo Club in Poland. Jim reported having a great time and felt very welcome. Just another cool thing about judo, walk into any dojo in the world and make instant friends.

On Sunday, August 5, 2018, Bob Marsh & Jose Marte took Gold at the NE Masters in Cambridge.

Central Connecticut Open








On April 9th, 2017 Celtic judo Club's Bob Marsh and Adam Dauphinee competed in New Britain CT. Bob won a silver medal with wins against Judoka from CT and RI. He lost the gold medal match to a fighter from Denmark. Adam went 2-2 with ippon wins against two higher ranks but lost his bronze medal match and finished in the dreaded 4th place position. Friend of the club, Andy Clarke (Phoenix judo) had a big day taking gold in his division.

On May 30th, Rick Nickerson (blue) and Domingo DeJesus earned their Nikyu promotions. Bob Marsh (middle) earned his shodan, 1st degree black belt. Bob has already reported food tasting better and the air smelling fresher!  Congratulations to all!

2019 BSG Table Tennis










Celtic Judo (&Table Tennis) Club had a successful debut in the table tennis tournament at the Bay State Games in the novice division.  Club champ Bob Marsh took 4th, Wayne Dickinson took Bronze and Bart Axelrod took silver, losing a close 3-2 match to the gold medalist.

2018 IRISH MASTERS OPEN












Wayne Dickinson took Silver at the Irish Masters Open in Dublin on November 3rd.  He won a tough match vs GBR, rallying from a shido deficit by countering an uchi mata attempt for waza ari in the final minute and holding off the aggressive Brit. He threw IRL for ippon in the first minute of the match to clinch Silver. He lost the gold medal to World Veterans Medalist Paul Cummins IRL in overtime by waza ari.
Friend of the club and the only other American at the tournament, Jim Miller (Tohoku) took two gold medals. The 2016 World Veterans Champion remains undefeated in international competition.

Jose Marte (second from left) went 3-2 and took Bronze at the Worcester Martial Arts Academy judo tournament on June 18th 2017. It was a solid performance in his return to competition after an 18 month hiatus. Jose is already preparing for the Irish Masters open that Celtic Judo Club will be traveling to Dublin for in November. Next up are the Bay State Games in July. 


2019 Quebec Open















​​CJC fought at the Quebec Open in Montreal where judoka form every Canadian province , several USA states, France, Brazil and Russia were in attendance. We came away with two medals and some valuable international competition experience.

2018 World Veterans Championships-Cancun










Celtic Judo Club’s Wayne Dickinson fought in his 9th World Masters/Veterans Judo Championships on October 17th in Mexico. He lost his first match by waza ari to the eventual gold medalist from Brazil. In his second match he beat Switzerland by ippon in the first minute of the match. Next was a win over Czech Republic by waza ari in overtime. In the bronze medal match he lost to Austria by ippon (uchi mata into a pin), finishing in 5th place. This is Wayne’s seventh top five finish at World’s. 

​​​​​​2017 Dutch Masters









Wayne Dickinson struck gold at the Dutch Masters Open Championships on May 20th in Delft, Netherlands, improving on his bronze medal performance there last year. This is the third straight year Wayne has competed in the Netherlands. At the 2015 World Veterans Championships in Amsterdam, he went 3-2 and finished 7th.

2018 New England Championships










CJC’s Jose Marte competed at the 2018 New England Championships in Danvers Massachusetts and took a bronze medal. He had four tough matches and appeared to be on his way to a fifth match but upon further review… after video review the call on the mat was overturned and the officials DQ’d him for a violation that Jose vehemently denies.

CJC's Jose Marte and Wayne Dickinson fought their way onto the podium at the 55th annual Dallas Invitational. Jose took Silver and Wayne took Bronze.

Welcome back Joe Felton,  Pan-Am Championships Silver Medalist, 2-time World Team member and Olympic alternate. Joe was a fixture on the national and international judo stage in the heavyweight and open weight divisions from the mid 90's into the early 2000's.He was on the podium at various US Nationals and the US Open. Before discovering judo, Joe played pro football in the Arena League and in the NFL for the Detroit Lions. All of us at Celtic Judo will be working on our ukemi with Joe's return to the dojo.

2021 Presidents Cup

















Jose Marte won two Silver medals at the President's Cup in Dallas. He placed in the M5 73kg division and moved up in weight and down in age for more matches and took another Silver.

Wayne Dickinson took Bronze in the 50+ Open Weight division.  


2024 National Championships









Max Axelrod took Bronze in his first ever Veterans (age 30+) division, M1 73kg, at the National Championships in Ontario, CA.

2023 World Veterans Championships
















Wayne Dickinson won a Silver Medal in the M7 81kg category at the World Veterans Championships in Abu Dhabi on Oct 31st.
In the first round Wayne beat Adayev (KAZ) in OT by penalty. In the quarterfinals he beat Bell (AUS) by two waza-ari scores. The semifinals was a rematch of the Final at the Eurometropole Masters in France in January. Wayne won another close one here vs Boulatika (FRA) on the first exchange in OT, throwing for waza-ari to clinch Silver.
He lost the Final to 4X World Veterans Champion Mauricio Neder (BRA) by ippon via Ko Soto Gari.

2022 National Judo Duals
















Four Celtic Judoka represented Team Massachusetts at the National Judo Duals team tournament in Atlanta. Team Mass lost two close duals with CO & GA 3-2 but Celtic Judoka finished with a 4-2 record.

On May 11th,  National Masters Champion Steve Viera trained at Celtic Judo Club fresh off of his double gold medal performance in Salt Lake City. Steve grew up in Massachusetts and was coached by Wayne Dickinson Sr in Fall River during the 1970's. Steve trains at Treasure Valley Judo Club in Boise Idaho.

2019 Summer Nationals











Three Celtic fighters travelled to Staten Island NY for the USJA/USJF Summer Nationals. Strong competitors from throughout the USA were in attendance at the two day event. Mark Jang fought in the IJF Junior 81kg division on day one. He had three tough matches, losing to the eventual gold and silver medalists. His brother James also lost to the eventual gold medalist in the first round of the 66kg Cadet division, then recorded a nice win before being eliminated after his third match. Wayne Dickinson took gold in the 50+ Veterans Middle Weight division defeating judoka from NJ & NH.

2024 Nutmeg State Games





   



Celtic fighters took home seven medals from the NSG in Middletown, CT. The team was led by Abdul Temirkhanov (middle in photo) making his Celtic debut. He went 6-0 with all ippons and took two Gold Medals.   Steven Axelrod(left) made his tournament debut and went 4-2, winning Silver and Gold

2022 Dallas Open and President's Cup









Three Celtic Judoka combined for seven medals and a 17-4 match record on the weekend before Thanksgiving in Dallas. Max Axelrod was promoted to brown belt for his outstanding performance.   🥇🥇🥇🥇🥈🥈🥉

2022 Bay State Games












Celtic Judoka took 12 medals at the Bay State Games in Fitchburg MA. Bruno Britto led the way, winning his novice division and taking silver in the Open division, sharing the podium with two black belts. Mike M took Gold and earned a Sportsmanship Award from the BSG organization. Both Bruno and Mike received belt promotions for their accomplishments.

2020 UNH Wildcat














CJC sent four fighters and Coach Gio to the University of New Hampshire on March 8th. Rick Nickerson led the way with four thunderous Ippons enroute to a Gold Medal. Bob Marsh and Wayne Dickinson also took Gold and Celtic was undefeated in the Veterans divisions.  James Jang took Bronze after four hard matches in the 66kg brown/black belt division.

​​​​​​   CJC Wins Team Title at 2019 N.E. Masters Championships






Celtic Judo Club won the Team Title at the New England Masters Championships in Cambridge on August 4th. Jose Marte led the way with gold in his regular division and two silver medals in newaza divisions. Bob Marsh took double gold and Rick Nickerson had the two loudest ippons of the day.

    2019 Ocean State International










CJC made the short trip to Providence with a strong team competing in the IJF Junior, Senior and Masters divisions at the Ocean State International Tournament.  We came away with eight total medals, including two Golds.








       2021 Minuteman Classic









​Celtic Judo Club sent 8 fighters to the Minuteman Classic in Westford MA on November 21st. We placed seven judoka on the podium, including Bob Marsh winning Gold in his Masters division.
